One day, on a relatively quiet mid summer afternoon, a three legged fly named Howard flew in the open screen door Of Miss Rosie PuppyCat’s house at his usual time – around 5pm.

Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!

That was the sound Howard made as he happily flew about, checking in at all his usual places along the way.

“I’m here Miss Rosie PuppyCat! I’m here now, and I’m ready to play our usual game!” he said. “But first, I must check to see if any tasty morsels have been left for me in the garbage can.”

Zooooooooooommmmmmm!

Howard flew into the kitchen and landed in his usual spot on the side of the open garbage bin.

“Mmmm. A fly-sized tasty morsel of four hour old chicken!”, he said to himself as he began to eat. As he did he looked up, and through his thousands of eyes, among other things, Howard noticed that the human who lived in the house with miss Rosie PuppyCat was inquisitively watching him.

“You like that chicken ‘ay boy? I left it on the edge of the garbage can especially for you because, since you’ve been coming here at this same exact time every day the entire summer so far, I figured you’d be back again. It’s neat that you, a housefly, only have three legs and can still fly like usual. You have a disability too, like me.”

“Yes I do. I lost my back leg one day as I tried to get away from a swatter. Thank you for leaving me the chicken. It was quite tasty.” Howard said as he finished his snack, cleaned his face and hands and prepared to fly away. “See you tomorrow human!”

Zooooooooooommmmmmm!

Off Howard went to find Miss Rosie PuppyCat.

Zooooooooooommmmmmm!

As he flew about his usual places in the house, he found Miss Rosie sleeping in her favorite comfy chair. He promptly began to annoy her, and thus try to coax her into playing.

Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!

“I’m here Miss Rosie PuppyCat! And I’m ready to play our usual game now! Howard shouted.

Miss Rosie looked up to acknowledge that she knew he was in the room, but didn’t budge from the sleeping position she’d taken in her favorite comfy chair some time earlier.

Before he knew it, Howard’s zoom zoom zooming had gotten the best of Miss Rosie PuppyCat, and the chase was on.

Miss Rosie suddenly leaped up from her chair and ran into a smaller room where Howard was still zoom zoom zooming about.

Come to the window Miss Rosie!” Howard called. “Lets play!

Howard flew over and landed in his usual spot in the corner of the window, poised and ready to play. Miss Rosie PuppyCat followed him, crazily jumping about and swatting in the air at Howard all along the way.

“Hee hee Miss Rosie! You haven’t gotten me yet! Try again!” Howard teased as he continued to fly about.

“Meow!” Miss Rosie said.

“Hee hee Miss Rosie! Hee hee!” Howard teased. “ You haven’t gotten me yet. Hee hee heh….”

Before Howard knew it, he was stuck between two soft furry paws with warm pink flesh in the middle and very sharp sticker claws on the ends.

“You’ve got me now Miss Rosie!” Howard said as he kept buzzing in an effort to break himself free.

“Buzz, buzz, buzz,” Howard said as he kept trying to escape. “Fly wing tickles to your paws Miss Rosie! I’m stuck between them. Buzz, buzz, buzz. ”

“Meow! That tickles!” Miss Rosie said.

“Buzz, buzz, buzz. “Buzz, buzz, buzz.” Howard said. “You’ve got me now Miss Rosie!”, Howard said joyfully.

“Yes. I’ve got you in my paws meow you silly fly.” Miss Rosie said. “I’ll never let you go.”

“Buzz, buzz, buzz. “Buzz, buzz, buzz. Buuuuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Fly wing tickles to you Miss Rosie! Haha!” Howard said as he managed to break free.

Howard and Miss Rosie continued to play their usual game over and over again until around 6pm. Then it was time for Howard to stop playing and leave Miss Rosie PuppyCat’s House for the day.

“Goodbye Miss Rosie PuppyCat! Time for me to go now. It was lovely playing with you today! See you tomorrow!”, Howard yelled as he waved and flew out the screen door. Miss Rosie went running after him, but Howard was long gone before she could even begin to catch up.

Howard came back to play with Miss Rosie PuppyCat at the same time every day for three summers in a row. And then, the next summer he did not return. No one knows what happened to him. Perhaps his other legs and the rest of him didn’t miss the swatter this time?
